If you work with hair extensions, you’ll have heard the terms single drawn, double drawn and super double drawn. But what do they actually mean, and why can two packs of hair with the same weight and length feel completely different?
It all comes down to the ratio of longer hairs within each pack.
At Muse + Vale, creating beautifully full hair from root to tip was incredibly important to us. It’s why we chose to create our extensions using a Super Double Drawn specification, giving stylists more usable length, fuller ends and a more luxurious finish without simply adding unnecessary weight.
What is Double Drawn Hair?
Natural human hair doesn’t grow at one perfectly even length. Within a ponytail, there will naturally be a mixture of longer and shorter strands.
During the drawing process, shorter hairs are removed to create a fuller, more consistent bundle.
With double drawn hair, a greater proportion of these shorter strands are removed compared with standard or single drawn hair. This creates extensions that are noticeably fuller through the mid-lengths and ends.
However, “double drawn” isn’t a completely standardised measurement across the hair extension industry.
The percentage of full-length strands can vary between manufacturers and suppliers, which is why one brand’s 60g pack can look and feel very different from another brand’s 100g pack, even when both are described as double drawn.
So, What Makes Hair Super Double Drawn?
Super Double Drawn hair takes this process further.
An even higher proportion of shorter strands are removed, leaving a much greater concentration of longer, full-length hairs within the finished weft.
The result?
Hair that looks thicker, denser and more consistent from the top of the weft right through to the ends.
This is particularly noticeable when you hold the hair together at the bottom. Rather than the ends becoming dramatically finer or wispy, they retain that beautiful density.
Why We Chose Super Double Drawn at Muse + Vale
When developing Muse + Vale, we didn’t simply want to put more grams of hair into a pack.
We wanted to make the grams you are buying work harder.
Our Super Double Drawn specification has been carefully selected to give a particularly high ratio of longer hairs throughout each weft. This is why our hair can feel surprisingly substantial for its stated weight.
It means stylists can create beautifully full results without relying on excessive stacking purely to compensate for thin ends.
And when you’re working with longer lengths, this becomes even more important. There’s little benefit in purchasing 20” hair if a significant proportion of the strands don’t actually carry that fullness through the full length.
